Always fascinated and seduced by space and its multiple dimensions - physical, psychological, phenomenological - Jorge Peris explores the surrounding environment as if it were a living being, and enquires into its umpteen alteration and metamorphosis possibilities. Through violent acts of transformation, aggression and corrosion limiting on destruction, the Spanish artist uproots space coordinates and gives life to an alchemic field where the spectator has no further reference points. In Peris works, the exhibition area is often transformed into an archaeological site bringing preceding space lives to the surface, while opening on to a kind of future memory, as if the artist were imagining a cataclysm reducing everything to ruins.

For his first exhibition at ZERO…, Peris transforms the gallery space into a precarious, unstable environment. With two large 7.5 hp compressors, he shoots a violent air and sand jet against the gallery walls, removing the plaster. Then, with the sand fallen on the floor, he keeps on scraping the walls, consuming them using the same powder produced by breaking up the plaster. On the terrace, two pipes go down to the cellar through a small window. In the environment below - parallel but just as hellish - the cancellation process continues almost casually. But nothing is left to chance: the artist follows strong lines and geometrical paths that, like rules set to be broken, allow him to create order from chaos while strengthening it.

Entitled Marte in Gaia e Cosimo- homage to the god Mars, war god and protector par excellence - this exhibition is also the last step along ZERO… exhibition path, before moving to its new premises.

Like a cycle alternating life and death, construction and destruction, the eternal return, Peris intervention accelerates the gallery’s life stages, thus underlining its intrinsic fragility. What is involved is altered time, subject to fast moves and sudden changes- sculpture as time machine: space is submitted to an atomic acceleration process in which particles are stimulated and matter dissolves to reappear under another shape and form. Thus space loses its historical identity and changes into a strange lengthening of itself, in which time is suspended in an instant frozen between past and future.

Peris often works by subtraction, igniting a vertiginous dislocation process so typical of his art. The violence of his gestures seems to imitate the energy of those physical laws controlling the universe. Peris treats space surrounding us like an organism metaphor: plaster, like skin in a body, is just surface protection behind which you get all the never-ending stories and emotional tensions. And just like a body, space changes, gets older, is altered by external elements and can be affected by strange sores and sudden infections.
